What is the correct 'hair' style for a cocker??

Thinking of having his hair clipped professionally. I usually trim him myself but it's growing like crazy and hard to manage. I don't want him to be shaved as i like the 'bushy' look..All pics appreciated if possible.

The classic clip for a cocker is a shaved back, tail, neck and head, with the to 1/3 of the ears shaved. The legs are left long and the feet are trimmed round and beveled. Some groomers will leave a tuft on the forehead (required in the show ring).

For show dogs, the back coat is stripped instead of clipped.

Many pet owners find that the full coat is too much to deal with, so they get a shortened version of the cocker clip.

I have some clients who don't like the shaved back, so they just get their cockers done in a clip that's one length all over, but longer than a shave (usually about an inch long). Most groomers would call this a "puppy clip".

Others just can't manage the hair, so they get their cocker shaved.

When you take him to the groomer, make it very clear to the groomer exactly what you want in a haircut. Some people are very vague in their instructions, it's hard to know exactly what they want. If you just want a regular cocker clip, that's not a problem, the groomer will do a cocker clip, but if you want something different then you need to be precise.

What the groomer can do will be limited by the condition of the dog's coat. Groomers cannot do fluffy clips on very matted dogs, and it is cruel to try as dematting is painful for the dog.

just do a google for 'cocker spaniel' Any qualified groomer will do a good job. I used to specialise in clipping cockers. The bushy look is simply ugly and doesn't show off their super body shape.

It all depends on whether you want to put him in the dog show ring or not. If you are going to show him you must have him groomed by a professional groomer until you can learn to do it yourself.. If you dog is just a pet it is only necessary to trim the hair on his ears as this can get long and very tangled and you should get a professional to show you how to do it to begin with.

don't ask for clipping -because you'll get him back and wonder what on earth they've done to him. Ask for a light cocker trim and consult a breeder as to who is good. The coat can actually be ruined with bad cut, as it may not grow as nicely again
