In general - I'd rinse it off and call it good (as long as the water in the toilet was "clean").

In the case of the ex, I'd go with the first answer and let it air dry! Especially if the water in the toilet was "dirty". . .in fact I'd "dirty" the water, knock the clip into it and let her find it herself!
